First Social Dance?
Things to bring:
What the heck is a Social Dance?
Every other Wednesday, we get together in a giant room, play 2 1/2 hours of music, and we dance until we drop! Sometimes we have live music and sometimes it's DJ'd. It's not just about dancing though - it's an opportunity to make new friends, be part of a community, practice what you've learned, and have fun! We encourage all of our dancers, regardless of level, to hang out and dance with everyone.
What if I don't know how to dance?
Don't worry - we have a 1 hour Taster Lesson before every Social Dance. It's designed for anyone brand new to Lindy Hop who's never danced it before. This lesson gives you both an introduction to Lindy Hop and a survival kit to get you through a night on the social dance floor. You'll learn the fundamentals of connecting with your partner and the music we affectionately call swing. You don't need to bring a partner - we rotate partners during class so that everyone will take turns dancing with everyone else, just like you will at a Social Dance!
So I can just...talk or dance with anybody?
Yeah! That's why everyone's there! Anyone can ask anyone else to dance. (Pro tip: if you only know how to dance one role, ask which role the other person dances first! And don't forget - people of all genders dance both parts!) You don't have to have an excuse to say no to a dance - as long as you're polite, the other person should be polite and understanding too.
If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable:
If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable for any reason at a SOSF event, we want to hear from you. We will handle all situations with the level of confidentiality and discretion that you prefer. We work hard to make sure that SOSF is an inclusive, safe space and we want to keep it that way. If you want to talk with us about a situation, we can be reached by:
- Comfy clothes you don’t mind sweating in. Shorts, t-shirts, skirts and dresses are all recommended. Cotton is your friend.
- Shoes that slide. No dance shoes? No problem. Just try to wear shoes that won’t fly off your feet and have little to no tread on their soles. For example, running shoes have a lot of tread. Keds and Converse shoes have very little tread.
- Your body. Over the past few years, you may have noticed that you have one of these. It is very difficult to dance without one, so please don’t leave yours at home.
- Your sense of fun. The first rule of swing dancing is to enjoy yourself. The second rule of swing dancing is to enjoy yourself. Don’t pressure yourself to get everything perfect the first time; just relax and be prepared to do weird and goofy things. Swing dancing is, by nature, silly.
