First time in a SWING OUT, SOUTH FLORIDA Class?
Don't sweat it! Here's everything you need to know:
WHERE: FUNK&FLOWOur classes are at: Funk&Flow Studio
1215 NE 17th Ct. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33305 The parking lot can get packed, so pull in carefully! Please arrive for class about 15 minutes prior to the start time. We are renting the studio, so we MUST start and finish on-time. |
What to wear:
- Comfy clothes you don’t mind sweating in. Don't wear anything that restricts your movement. Cotton is your friend! Shorts, t-shirts, skirts, and dresses are all a-okay if you're comfy in them. We'd recommend shorts under skirts. A lot of folks dress casually or even how they would to go on a run. There's no need to dress up - we come to class to work!
- Shoes that slide. No dance shoes? No problem. Just try to wear shoes that won’t fly off your feet and have little to no tread on their soles, like suede or leather-soled shoes. For example: running shoes have a lot of tread, while Keds and Converse have very little tread. Shoes with less tread will make it easier and safer to turn! PLEASE NOTE: heels and black-bottom dress shoes are prohibited at Funk&Flow!
Don't forget:
- Hygiene. You will be dancing in close proximity to other students. Please don't forget to shower, rub on your deodorant, and freshen your breath. Likewise, please skip any strongly scented perfumes, colognes, body sprays, etc. If you anticipate getting sweat-soaked, feel free to bring an extra t-shirt or a towel.
- Hydration. Don't forget a water bottle! Funk&Flow does not have a water fountain, so we strongly encourage everyone to bring your own water!
- Your body. Over the past few years, you may have noticed that you have one of these. It is very difficult to dance without one, so please don’t leave yours at home.
- Your sense of fun. We dance to connect with our bodies, the music, and each other. Don’t pressure yourself to get everything perfect the first time - just relax and be prepared to try new and sometimes weird or goofy things. Everyone is in class to grow and work on their dancing, regardless of their experience or skill level - get out of your head and into your body!
WHENTuesday Nights Foundations 7:45 - 8:45 PM Foundations + 9:00 - 9:30 PM Open Practice &/or Social Dancing 9:30 - 10:00 PM Please arrive for class about 15 minutes prior to the start time. We are renting the studio, so we MUST start and finish on-time. |
Shoe Tip!You want shoes that slide, not stick! While slightly counterintuitive, sports sneakers are normally not good for this style of dancing.
If you don't have good dance shoes, no need to spend a fortune! Just stick or glue suede to the bottom of an old pair. Click below for an affordable option that's easy to apply. |
Practice Makes Perfect!
Lindy Hop and other authentic jazz dance styles are vernacular dances, which means they were created socially on the dance floor.
As such, these styles are best practiced through social dancing! We have regular bi-weekly Social Dances on Wednesday nights that are the perfect opportunity to practice and meet more dancers!

CLASS POLICIES
MISSED CLASS: The cost of individual missed classes will not be deducted from the cost of the current or future class sessions. If you register for a monthly session and need to miss more than 3 classes, we will happily roll your class pass over to a future session - please reach out to us if this happens for you!
ATTENDANCE: These lessons build on each other over the course of the session. Some classes cover a LOT of material and sometimes missing one can make you feel left in the dust - but life happens and sometimes classes have to be missed. If you miss a class, please arrange to meet with a fellow student or one of our instructors outside of class to get caught up before the next class. We don't want folks who miss a class to feel overwhelmed or frustrated and we can't waste all the other students' valuable class time to catch that person up.
ILLNESS: We are dedicated to the health and wellbeing of our students. As a courtesy to your instructors and fellow students, please stay home and rest if you aren't feeling 100%. Even if you’re confident it’s “just allergies”, we dance in close proximity with our partners and nobody wants to get a cough or sneeze to the face. If you come to class with active symptoms that could potentially be contagious, you may be asked to leave class and rest up at home!
- If you miss a class due to illness, our regular policy applies - if you arrange with an instructor, they will catch you up outside of class before the next one. If you have to miss 3 or more classes, your class pass will be rolled over to a future session.
